well-designed sites criteria~

I have read a web which is talk about how to have a good web design.
http://blog.siterevamp.com/2007/06/good-web-design.html

This articles mentions that the biggest problem that Web sites have these days is navigation. As sites get bigger and more complex, they have much more value, but it's harder to have people get to what they want.

I like the point which the article has mentioned, "It is very important to keep in mind that your website ISN'T about what you like. It is about what your customers like!". For many web designes, they design the web site mainly make design decisions in a committee, and a VP of marketing but lacking a focus on customers. The purpose of a web site is to provide valuable information to its visitors and give them what they are looking for but not based on some business owners' personal preferences. So the article mentions a few things that a business owner could do to facilitate the design of a visitor-friendly website and then they can improve their website.

User-centered design is a well-known good practice, but it is difficult to know the user preference easily, and even users unusually do not know what they want.
To know users deeply, it may take long time and high cost to get the result comparing the company's benefit. Maybe, that's why many companies not to do so.
